A bit about me

Introducing…

Dr Julie O’Brien has been a GP for over 20 years, seeing people across the full range of general practice concerns. She graduated from the University of Queensland in 1996 and worked across Cairns, Gympie, the Sunshine Coast and Sydney before settling into general practice as her long-term home.

Along the way she trained in emergency medicine and obstetrics and gynaecology, gained her General Practice Fellowship in 2004, and completed a Diploma of Child Health through the University of Sydney.

What keeps her most engaged is longitudinal care. Getting to know people over a period of time and working with them collaboratively. She finds that kind of continuity changes what’s possible in a consultation.

The areas she works in most often are ones that can be genuinely hard to navigate. Mental health, menopause care, neurodivergence, hypermobility. The conditions that don’t always get looked after particularly well elsewhere.

Julie finds that kind of work genuinely interesting. Working through the tricky things together to really figure out what’s going on.

Her approach is trauma-informed and she cares deeply about health equity.

People who find healthcare hard to access, or who’ve had difficult experiences in it before, are often the ones she’s most motivated to help.

Julie says: ‘What matters most to me is that people feel seen, accepted, and taken seriously. General practice is at its best when people feel safe, listened to, and supported through whatever they’re facing. I really enjoy working with complex issues. Sometimes, the things that people don’t get looked after particularly well are the ones most worth paying attention to. We work through them together to really figure out what’s going on and help them achieve the best health outcomes they can.’

My line in the sand

This means our whole team – GPs, nurses, allied health, specialists – work together to give you the time and attention you need. We get to know you, earn your trust, and use our combined specialties to offer new and improved models of care.

Our team sees this as a partnership with you because you know your own life best. And with each other, because great healthcare isn’t a solo act.

We put our passion into practice because that’s what the best healthcare needs.
